Search the distance!! Search the distance!! Get away!! Approached! How many times have you heard shouting these words from the master at the corner during a meeting.
In every combat sport is the distance between us and our opponent guaranteeing a good safety margin in defence but also the counterattack.
It is clear that each discipline provides for various distances, who fight in MMA will have a different space than boxing or Kickboxing fights, but not only, much also depends on the strategies, techniques and physical capabilities of the athlete and the quality of his opponent.
Sports literature identifies 4 types of distance:
- long distance: typically used in those sports where you fight with the use of the lower limbs (thay muai, kickboxing or Taekwondo) and preferred by the so-called Boxer out-fighter who use the Jab as favorite shot;
- the average distance is used mostly by the boxers, from here you can launch any direct or hit the uprights or hooks, or dubbed series, obviously reactions times are changing and are inversely proportional to '' separating us from the opponent;
- the short range or melee: MMA, wrestling, judo are those disciplines where the shots and/or combinations are carried out from a distance. Even in boxing is expected the body to body dominated by circular strokes (hooks and uppercuts) quick and powerful than the parties that cannot explode all over their power as limited by short hike (ROM) of the lever arm.
- on the ground: the distance is reduced to a minimum or even non-existent, The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is the classic example of ground combat sports and classic techniques used are submissions, stranglings and keys.
In every single match these distances vary continuously in relation to different heights between the boxers. Take for example a Cobby boxer who fights with a taller opponent, initially in defensive or study must definitely keep a distance that allows them to avoid the blows of the opponent (Figure 1) and later with physically in possession of good mobility of the trunk can shorten the distance (Figure 2) short steps forward , dodging the twist of Flex direct opponent and fighting back with shots to the body. Melee (Figure 3) is preferable at that moment of the match where the opponent fell athletically, clearly unable to move in and out by the powerful shots on both the body and the face.
Boxing is a sport of situation where it is impossible to accurately describe the techniques used in response to blasts opponent, each fighter has his own rhythm which is an action and for every action there is a time.
All we can manage is our tactics through the technique, learn how to pull good shots with maximum rapidity and continuity can, by introducing new skills (invitation, feints, dodges …) to carry the fight on our behalf.
