I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that between cigarettes and bad blood not workout.
I’m not talking about the harmful effects of such advertised in awareness campaigns and on the same packages, but my attention was focused on the negative changes and the effects that smoking has on sports performance.
All of us know that a cigarette contains mainly: nicotine, tar and develops from the combustion of carbon monoxide.
Nicotine, is responsible for a smoker’s dependence as a result of inhibition of the enzyme that controls levels of dopamine, the surplus is not destroyed, and builds a sense of greater pleasure (the person is then stimulated to smoke more and more). At the same time its action on peripheral organs increases heart rate, blood pressure and heart excitability by increasing the incidence of ischemic heart disease.
Think now who is in preparation phase where aerobics needs to have a low heart rate, nicotine causes exactly the opposite effect.
On the tarmac as previously mentioned skipping every speech otherwise I should talk about the content of carcinogenic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic amines and inorganic compounds, but this is not the appropriate place.
Let’s move on to CARBON MONOXIDE, a colorless and odorless gas with a hemoglobin-binding capacity of approximately 325 times faster than oxygen, the consequence is less O2 uptake capacity both to pulmonary all organs, including muscles.
This what? When the oxygen demand is high because of training, reduced lung capacity does not allow a correct input to the muscles all causes a premature step from the mechanism of aerobic to anaerobic energy production, with high accumulation of lactic acid and metabolic waste. (see related article)
Another negative effect is the greatest fatigue, in fact the carbon monoxide binding to hemoglobin takes away oxygen space that can no longer be transported to your muscles begin to lose their contractile capacity and reach to get tired much quicker. The heart is a muscle and to try to compensate for the lack of oxygen increases its range, with a parallel increase in heart rate (basic parameter in building training volumes).
In the long term effects of smoking become even more devastating for the sport performance:
- Chronic reduction of respiratory function and delay (adolescents) in the development and growth of lung function and risk of respiratory infection with decrease of time devoted to training and increased care for that;
- Increased likelihood of injury and healing times;
- Trouble controlling your weight, smoking interferes with taste and satiety.
I don’t think there’s more to add, you can choose to continue smoking but remember whenever you light a cigarette that SERIOUSLY DAMAGES The WORKOUT!!!
“I can’t get into smoking habit”.
“Have you ever tried yoga?” Yes, I can smoke even upside down “.
